Simba Telecom started operations in October 1998 as the main dealer of MTN Uganda Ltd, licensed in 1998 as the Second National Operator. Within six months of starting operations, Simba and MTN were able to sign up twice as many customers as the incumbent network had achieved in four years. Simba and MTN were able to quickly drive MTN to market shares greater than 50%.
Simba has ~30 shops in Uganda. Unlike Kenya and Tanzania, the Ugandan mobile distribution market is governed by franchise model, where dealers are allocated regional exclusivity. MTN has >55% subscriber market share and 70% revenue share in a 6 network environment. The Uganda mobile market has ~14 million customers and is expecting to add at least another 4 million over the next two years.
Simba Telecom Uganda is MTN’s and Uganda’s largest dealer, with a turnover of over US$80 million in 2010, accounting for approximately 21% of MTN’s prepaid turnover. Simba exclusively serves Uganda’s “money belt” encompassing a large portion of the capital city of Kampala, and stretching through Central and South Western urban centres of Masaka, Mbarara and Kabale (Uganda’s largest and most prosperous cities)
