It was established in 1948 as a voluntary association to discuss common problems affecting the tea industry and find solutions; For all the years till 1999 the voluntary association had not been registered. UTA is now a registered non government organization limited by guarantee. It is a non-profit organization funded through monthly subscription by members.

Igara Growers Tea Factory Limited (Igara) is a small holder tea Factory located in the South Western part of Uganda in Kyamuhunga Sub-county, Igara West, Bushenyi District. It was established in 1969 as part of the governments’ effort to reduce poverty in the 1960’s. Government by an act of Parliament established Uganda Tea Growers Corporation (UTGC) in 1966 to take care of the interests of smallholder tea farmers in Uganda and as their green leaf production increased UTGC put up Igara as one of the four smallholder tea factories in Uganda to process leaf obtained from Bushenyi district. During the 1970’s political instability led to a decline in the entire tea industry and this almost brought Igara to a close as the factory was deprived of all essential inputs required to run it and vast amounts of tea fields were abandoned. In 1989, a European Union funded ten-year tea rehabilitation project in the small holder tea sub sector started. The project covered the rehabilitation of farmers’ gardens as well as the processing factories. As part of governments’ overall divestiture programme, Igara and indeed the other three smallholder tea factories of Mabale, Mpanga, and Kayonza growers were privatized and sold to the smallholder tea farmers in the respective areas. The process started in 1995 and was completed in 2000 when full small holder ownership was attained.

Uganda Tea Corporation Limited (UTCL) has been a leading tea producer and exporter in Uganda for over 20 years. It has three estates with its headquarters at Kasaku near Lugazi. Kasaku is about 48 Km from Kampala and 40 Km from Jinja.
From a mere 200,000 kilos of tea production per annum in the early 1980’s, to the currently increasing production of over 3.5 Million kilos of tea per annum, the company’s growth is due to its committed work force and sound industry practices.
UTCL is also one of the leading corporations in the private sector in Uganda contributing more than 10% of Uganda’s national tea production. About 80% of the company’s production is exported, earning valuable foreign exchange for the country.
With three production lines at one of the factories running at full capacity, the company is in the process of upgrading facilities and equipment – which is expected to immensely increase the production.

Mpanga Growers Tea Factory is a public limited company owned by small holder tea growers. It was incorporated in 1995 . It is located in western Uganda Kabarole district, producing high quality tea for local and export market.It is one of the tea factories formerly under Uganda Tea Growers Corporation (U T G C), established by an Act of parliament on 17th February 1966.
